Saltwater (Estuarine) Crocodiles inhabit the estuaries, freshwater swamps and lagoons of northern Australia. Crocodiles are excellent swimmers and can exceed speeds of 25km per hour.

The boat ride on Hartley’s Lagoon is a unique eco adventure. On specially constructed boats, visitors can explore the natural habitat of the Australian Saltwater Crocodile and learn about the ecological significance of the melaleuca wetlands found throughout northern Australia.

BIRDWATCHING

The natural environment of Hartley’s Lagoon is a sanctuary to a wide variety of birds. During the year over 140 species of wild birds can be seen at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. A great opportunity for bird watchers to spot kingfishers, egrets, herons, lorikeets etc. which choose to live around the wetlands.

Hartley’s Lagoon is a man-made water feature. It evolved from a small agricultural dam that filled during the wet season. The shallow seasonal rain was sufficient enough to promote the growth of Melaleuca leucodendra, commonly known as ‘paperbark’ trees. Today Hartley’s Lagoon is a multi-faceted ecosystem supporting a wide range of flora and fauna.
